Why a 500 score is not the dealbreaker here
Tribal lenders underwrite against your next several paychecks, not your credit history. The underwriting model looks at verifiable income, the health of your checking account (overdrafts, returned items), and identity verification. Many never pull a hard bureau file; many also skip Teletrack, the shared database of short-term loans. A sub-580 score, a past charge-off, or a thin file matters far less than whether the payment fits the income the bank statements show.
This is not generosity — it is a business model. These lenders price for the risk with APRs that commonly run 300%–700%+. You are paying for access with weaker credit; the trade is real, and it deserves an honest look before you sign.
What actually gets applicants denied
- Unverifiable income. Cash pay with no paper trail is hard to underwrite. Benefits, pensions, annuities, and gig platforms with deposit history usually qualify.
- An unpaid loan already open in the network. Even lenders that skip Teletrack often share their own default lists. A live balance elsewhere is the most common quiet rejection.
- Recent overdraft streaks. The checking account is the collateral here, in effect. A statement full of NSF fees predicts default.
- Active bankruptcy. Most automated models stop for an open case.
Notice what is not on the list: your score, a past repossession, old medical collections. That is the practical difference from bank credit.
The odds, honestly
Approval is never guaranteed — no honest lender can promise that before seeing your data. The realistic picture: applicants with steady depositable income and a checking account in reasonable order are approved frequently, even with scores under 550. First-time offers cluster at $300–$800; larger amounts ($1,500–$2,000) typically arrive after a first loan is repaid on schedule. If a site promises thousands on your first request with no checks, you are looking at a data-harvesting funnel, not a lender.
You can check offers through our request form — one form reaches several lenders, and seeing offers uses a soft check.
Cheaper doors to knock on first
Before accepting a 300%+ APR, price these:
- A credit-union PAL — $200–$2,000 at a 28% federal APR cap, 1–6 months. If you can join a federal credit union, this is the cheapest structured small loan in America.
- Payment plans with the utility, hospital, or landlord — free to ask, and they must often offer hardship plans.
- Earned-wage access apps — draw hours you already worked for little or no fee.
And if your state licenses short-term lending, a state-capped cash advance is usually cheaper per dollar borrowed — start from our state cost guides.
